Reading the River
Reading the River is an ongoing initiative by Hawapani Foundation that interprets water quality data to understand the changing state of rivers and tributaries.
While large volumes of data are generated through monitoring systems, they are often difficult to access, interpret, and use in a consistent manner. Reading the River translates this data into accessible insights—mapping monitoring networks, tracking changes in water quality, and identifying patterns that shape the condition of river systems.

Water Systems Dispatch
Water Systems Dispatch is a periodic series by Hawapani Foundation that brings together insights from monitoring systems, institutional responses, and governance frameworks shaping the safety of drinking water and water ecosystems.
While causes, immediate responses, expert commentary, and historical warnings are reported, structured insights on how these incidents are taken up within institutional systems remain limited. Information does exist. But it is often dispersed, technical, and not easily accessible in a consistent manner.
These updates aim to trace how issues of water quality and water ecosystems are addressed in India across these systems. With these updates, we map the actors involved, their responses over time, and the factors shaping decision making while also surfacing the environmental and governance knowledge embedded within these processes.

RiverNotes
RiverNotes is a public platform that translates how rivers are governed in India.
Drawing from tribunal proceedings, government submissions, policy documents, and official reports, RiverNotes makes complex and often inaccessible information understandable and usable for a wider public. At a time when decisions shaping rivers are increasingly technical, new challenges are emerging and the systems are getting evolved, the platform works to unpack the processes, actors, and key challenges shaping them.
By turning dense records into clear, contextualised insights, RiverNotes aims to strengthen public understanding, enable informed engagement, and contribute to greater accountability in river governance.
About Us
TBF Hawapani Foundation is a not-for-profit think tank registered as a Section 8 company in New Delhi, India. We work at the intersection of environmental data, public knowledge, and community action.
In India, vast amounts of environmental data are generated every day—on air, water, land, and ecosystems. Yet much of this information remains difficult to access, understand, or use meaningfully. Hawapani was created to bridge this gap.
We translate complex environmental data and public information into clear, accessible insights and knowledge products. Our work is designed to support citizens, researchers, decision-makers, policymakers, and academic institutions in making sense of environmental realities and taking informed, evidence-based action.
At the core of our approach is a belief that data is most powerful when it is shared, understood, and used collectively. By making environmental knowledge more transparent and usable, we aim to strengthen accountability, enable better governance, and contribute to building healthier ecosystems and improved quality of life.
Our current projects focus on riverine and coastal environments, as well as water quality as a distinct domain. We monitor how different interventions shape these ecosystems, track ongoing efforts to address emerging challenges, and work to simplify these processes—so more people can meaningfully engage with and contribute to solutions.
